Zip Big Files

by Susan DaffronProtected by Copyscape. Do not copy.

If you have a big file that doesn't fit on a floppy disk and you don't have a CD writer or a removable drive, it can be challenging to give these large files to other people. However, if you have a copy of WinZip, you can use it to create a compressed "zip" file that that spans two or more floppy disks.

Open WinZip and if you have it set up to use the Wizard, choose the Create A New Zip File option and click the Next button. Now type the location and name of the Zip file that you want to create, such as A:\MyBigZipFile.zip. Click the Next button and drag and drop the files you want to zip into the Wizard's Select Files window. Alternatively, you can select files and click the Add Files or Add Folders buttons to locate and add files or entire folders. Make sure you put your floppy diskette in the drive and click the Zip Now button. WinZip prompts you when you need to insert the next disk.

If you don't like to use the wizard, from the "classic" view, choose File|New Archive. Select the floppy drive where you want the zip file to be located, type the file name, and click OK. Now click the Add button. Select the files and make sure that the Multiple Disk Spanning drop-down box is set to automatic.

Unzipping your archive file works much like unzipping anything else. You just follow the instructions when it tells you to insert a disk. So now, even when you have large files, you know you can still give them to others on a plain old floppy disk.
